If you’ve ever found yourself standing in front of your closet thinking, “We have family pictures in two days and absolutely nothing to wear,” you’re not alone.

Choosing outfits is often the most stressful part of preparing for your session, but it doesn’t have to be.

Here are my favorite tips to help your family look timeless, coordinated, and effortlessly beautiful.

Choose a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits

The days of everyone wearing matching shirts and jeans are behind us.

Instead, choose 3–5 colors that complement each other.

Some beautiful combinations include:

  • Cream, tan, sage, and denim
  • Rust, ivory, olive, and brown
  • Dusty blue, beige, and white
  • Soft blush, cream, and taupe

The goal is to coordinate, not match.

When everyone wears different pieces within the same color palette, your photos feel natural and timeless.

Dress yourself First

This is my biggest piece of advice.

Find an outfit that makes you feel beautiful and comfortable, then build everyone else’s outfits around it.

After all, if the woman of the house feels confident, it shows in every photograph.

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they add movement and softness, but the most important thing is choosing something you genuinely love wearing.

My top favorite place to find dresses for photos is Baltic Born and Joyfolie.

Think Texture

Texture adds depth and interest without overwhelming your images.

Consider fabrics like:

  • Linen
  • Cotton
  • Knit sweaters
  • Gauze
  • Lace
  • Corduroy
  • Muslin

These materials photograph beautifully and give your gallery a warm, organic feel.

Keep Patterns Simple

A subtle floral dress or a small plaid shirt can add personality.

Large logos, bold graphics, neon colors, and busy patterns tend to draw attention away from the people in the photo, the very reason we’re here.

When in doubt, simpler is usually better.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

It’s easy to spend hours picking outfits and then throw on the first pair of shoes you find.

Choose shoes that complement your outfit and the location.

Neutral sandals, boots, clean sneakers, or simple flats often photograph beautifully.

Athletic shoes, flip-flops, and brightly colored footwear can be distracting unless they naturally fit the style of your session.

Dress for the Season

Comfort matters.

If everyone is too hot or too cold, it shows.

Choose clothing that’s appropriate for the weather so your family can relax, move naturally, and enjoy the experience.

Don’t Forget the Little Details

A few minutes of preparation goes a long way.

Before your session, consider:

  • Removing hair ties from wrists
  • Emptying phones and keys from pockets
  • Cleaning little faces and hands
  • Trimming fingernails if they’ll be visible in close-ups
  • Planning jewelry

These tiny details make a surprisingly big difference.

What About Babies and Toddlers?

Comfort comes first. My own kids are incredibly picky with itchy fabrics.

Choose soft, well-fitting clothing that allows little ones to move freely.

For babies, simple outfits, rompers, knit sets, bloomers, or even a diaper cover with a cozy swaddle can photograph beautifully.

And don’t forget to bring a backup outfit, accidents happen!

Still Not Sure?

Don’t worry,that’s what I’m here for.

I’m always happy to help coordinate colors, give feedback, or find Amazon links before your session.

I’d much rather answer a dozen outfit questions beforehand than have you stress over it alone.

The Best Outfit Is One That Feels Like You

At the end of the day, your children won’t remember exactly what everyone wore.

They’ll remember being wrapped up in your arms, laughing together, and spending an evening making memories.

Choose clothing that feels comfortable, reflects your family’s personality, and lets your connection shine.

The most beautiful thing you’ll wear to your session isn’t a dress or a button-up shirt.

It’s the love your family shares.
