If you’ve ever worried that your family isn’t “good at taking pictures,” let me reassure you of something…
You don’t have to know how to pose.
In fact, some of my favorite images happen after I stop posing altogether.
While every photographer has a different approach, my style is a blend of gentle posing and natural prompts. This allows us to create timeless portraits while still capturing the real connections that make your family unique.
What Is Posed Photography?
Posed photography is exactly what it sounds like.
I’ll help you stand in flattering light, adjust your hands, fix loose hair, tilt your head, and guide everyone into a beautiful composition. These are often the images Grandma frames on her wall or that become your Christmas card.
Posing gives us a strong foundation, especially at the beginning of your session when everyone is still getting comfortable in front of the camera.
Don’t worry, I won’t leave you wondering what to do with your hands.
What Are Prompts?
Once everyone is relaxed, we’ll start moving.
Instead of saying, “Smile at the camera,” I might say:
- Walk together while holding hands.
- Whisper your favorite thing about Mom.
- Snuggle your baby close and breathe them in.
- Tickle your little one.
- Tell Dad the worst dad joke you know.
- Race your kids to the next tree.
- Dance together.
These little prompts create genuine laughter, connection, and emotion that simply can’t be forced.
Instead of stiff smiles, you get memories.
The Best of Both Worlds
My sessions usually follow a simple rhythm.
We’ll begin with a beautifully posed image. Let you warm up. Ensure we get the classic family portrait.
Then we’ll let life happen.
You’ll cuddle, laugh, chase toddlers, wipe little noses, walk, fix tiny curls, and soak in the moments that make your family yours. Those in-between moments often become the photographs clients treasure the most.
“But My Kids Never Sit Still…”
Perfect.
Seriously.
Children were never meant to stand perfectly still and smile for an hour.
I don’t expect perfection, I expect personality.
Some of my favorite photographs happen when toddlers are exploring, babies are reaching for Mom, or siblings burst into laughter over something completely unexpected.
Your children don’t have to perform.
They simply have to be themselves.
What If We’re Awkward?
Almost every family tells me this before their session.
Then about fifteen minutes in, they’re laughing, talking, and completely forget there’s a camera nearby.
That’s because my job isn’t just pressing a shutter, it’s creating an environment where you feel comfortable enough to simply enjoy your family.
I’ll guide you every step of the way.
Why I Photograph This Way
Years from now, I don’t just want you to remember what everyone looked like.
I want you to remember how it felt.
The way your daughter wrapped her arms around your neck.
The way your son reached for Dad’s hand.
The way your newborn fit perfectly against your chest.
The way your husband looks at you, right now, at this moment in time.
Those little moments disappear far too quickly.
Photographs help us hold onto them just a little longer.
Let’s Tell Your Story
Whether you’re booking a family session, maternity session, newborn session, or simply want updated photos of the people you love most, my goal is always the same:
To create timeless images that are beautiful enough to frame, and heartfelt enough to make you feel something every time you look at them.
