When it comes to babies, one of the most common questions I receive is…
“What’s the difference between a Fresh 48 and a newborn session?”
Honestly, many parents aren’t quite sure either, and that’s completely okay.
In fact, I often receive inquiries asking about a “Fresh Newborn” session because both happen shortly after baby arrives.
While they both celebrate your newest little love, they’re actually two very different experiences.
What Is a Fresh 48 Session?
A Fresh 48 takes place within your baby’s first 24–48 hours of life, before you leave your birth location.
That could be:
- A hospital
- A birth center
- Your home after a home birth
The goal is to preserve those incredibly fresh, fleeting moments that disappear almost overnight.
The wrinkly skin.
The tiny hospital bracelet.
Your baby’s first outfit.
The bassinet.
The fresh newborn features that seem to change by the hour.
These sessions are quiet, emotional, and beautifully documentary.
Why Fresh 48 Sessions Are Booked During Pregnancy
Because timing is everything.
If you’re delivering at a birth center, you may only be there for a few hours before heading home.
Even hospital stays are often just one or two nights.
That doesn’t leave much time to plan a photography session after baby arrives.
For that reason, I always recommend booking your Fresh 48 during pregnancy.
We’ll go over all of your preferences ahead of time so you don’t have to think about it while you’re recovering from labor and soaking in those first moments with your baby.
When labor begins, all I ask is for a quick text letting me know things are underway.
There’s no need for constant updates (unless you want to!)
Once your little one arrives, you can simply let me know when you’re ready for your session, and we’ll make a plan from there.
What Does a Fresh 48 Session Look Like?
Fresh 48 sessions are primarily documentary.
I’m there to preserve your baby’s very first chapter just as it unfolds.
We’ll capture things like:
- Tiny fingers and toes
- Fresh newborn details
- Skin-to-skin snuggles
- First family moments
- Parents soaking it all in
- Siblings meeting baby
- A few gently guided family portraits
While I always make time for beautiful images of your baby, my favorite photographs are the ones that include the people who already love them so much.
After all…
This isn’t just the story of a new baby.
It’s the story of a growing family.
So Then What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
Lifestyle newborn sessions usually take place within the first two weeks after birth in the comfort of your own home.
By this point, everyone has had a little time to settle in.
You’re no longer watching the clock before discharge.
Instead, we can slow down and tell the story of your family’s new normal.
We’ll photograph your baby in the nursery you lovingly prepared.
We’ll capture cuddles on the couch.
Quiet moments in the rocking chair.
Tiny stretches.
Big yawns.
The place your baby will call home.
A More Relaxed Pace
Unlike a Fresh 48 session, newborn sessions aren’t tied to a hospital discharge.
That gives us much more flexibility when scheduling.
Need an extra day because everyone is exhausted?
No problem.
Baby had a rough night?
We’ll work around it.
These sessions move at your baby’s pace with plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, outfit changes, and snuggles.
I’ll gently guide you into natural poses while leaving room for authentic moments to unfold along the way.
Which Session Is Right for You?
Choose a Fresh 48 if you want to remember those incredible first hours exactly as they happened: the hospital room, the tiny details, and the overwhelming emotions of meeting your baby.
Choose a Lifestyle Newborn Session if you want to document your family settling into life at home with a slower, more flexible experience.
Many families choose one.
Some choose both.
Because while they happen only days apart…
They tell two completely different parts of your story.
Two Chapters. One Beautiful Beginning.
The first hours of your baby’s life pass in the blink of an eye.
Then suddenly you’re home, learning a new rhythm together.
Both seasons are beautiful.
Both deserve to be remembered.
Whether I’m meeting you in your hospital room or stepping into your home a few days later, my goal is always the same:
To preserve the moments you’ll wish you could hold onto forever.
