A work in progress, art & artist both

Welcome to Light Reclaimed, the online home of the photographic efforts of RJ Johnson (that would me, your humble narrator). Right now things look a little bare bones as I get things unpacked and set up, but soon we'll have much photo goodness. Promise!

The terms "found light" and "improvisational photography" came to me when I was asked to describe what I'm doing with a camera. Found light borrows from the idea of "found art"; items that are discovered and re-purposed to create new and intriguing works. In my case I prefer working with available light -whatever's on hand from daylight to stage lighting to office lights. Understand: I have a flash unit and I'm not afraid of using it, but so often the light at hand is doing a magnificent job of telling a story that I like letting it take the lead.

Improvisational photography for me is about working within the moment, whether I'm at a dance event (one of my favorite places to shoot), a street fair, or with a model. Both my training in improvisational theater and understanding my own preferences have led me to realize I'm less of a "meticulous planner" shooter and more of a "seat of the pants" creator. I look forward to the pleasant surprises when everything comes together and those "Eureka!" moments come through the lens.

And I would be most remiss if I didn't give a tip of the topper to Professional Muse, Casey Castille, who graces the title banner.

The Burlesque Picture of the Day is my ongoing photoblog featuring the amazing performers (and even burlesque supporters on occassion) who make nearly naked entertainment so much fun! BPoD kicked off in July 2009 and has been updated daily since January 1, 2010. Everyday a new bit of ecdysiastic enjoyment is posted for your perusing pleasure. Comments welcomed and even encouraged!
